South America.
Once the international travel bug had bitten, the next step was the rest of Latin America where many more steam engines remained in service, ranging from the Baldwin meter gauge 2-6-6-2's in Brazil to the dimunitive 75 cm gauge 2-8-2's hauling the Old Patagonia Express in Argentina. Not to mention husky meter gauge 2-10-2's in the Andes, and the incredible Devil's Nose in Ecuador.
The decade of the 1970's was the Latin American Steam decade for me. From 1970 to 1980 George Werner and I operated "Central American Rail Tours" and ran more or less annual steam tours in Guatemala and Central America, and a few more ambitious trips to South America.
